Each nuc will have a queen grafted from one of our high scoring UBeeO queens. They come in a cardboard EZ nuc box with five deep frames, a laying queen, and plenty of bees and resources.
Nucs will be available in May 2025 after inspection by VDACS.
A nuc (short for nucleus colony) is a miniature colony with a laying queen, plenty of workers, brood of all stages, drawn comb, and resources such as honey and pollen.
Starting with a nuc is a great idea because the queen has already been accepted and the bees can grow seamlessly into their permanent home.
When it comes to buying bees, we believe nucs are the best choice.
Package bees are the main alternative to nucs when it comes to buying bees. Unlike nucs, packages are not miniature colonies.
A package consists of a few pounds of bees shaken into a shipping box and given an unfamiliar queen. Packages contain bees from several different hives.
A package does not include frames of comb or foundation. The only resource that comes in a package is a small can of syrup to keep the bees alive until installation.
If all goes well the bees will acclimate to each other and accept the queen a few days after installation into a hive.
If the queen is not accepted by the bees, another queen will need to be sourced or the colony will not survive.
In our opinion, packages are not the best option for buying bees.
Packages are mass produced each season and shipped all over the United States. They are much cheaper and quicker to produce than nucs.
Making a strong nuc can take a couple weeks with a mated queen or over a month with a queen cell.
A package can be shaken together in a few minutes.
Packages are typically less expensive than nucs but have higher chances of queen problems, absconding, and total loss.
We do not produce packages. Our advice for people using packages is to feed heavily while they get established and keep a close eye on the queen. If any drawn frames can be given to a new package it will help them get established quicker. A frame of brood would be an even better boost.
We recommend buying local nucs with a laying queen whenever possible.
